Interesting question... With every business there's drug users, even bankers, lawyers and high flyers are addicted to coke etc.... I don't think that it's just escorting that people associate with drug using, although they're an easy target because of the seediness of some prostitution. You could say the same about the stick thin models that end up cocaine and heroin users.
It's the same with any business you can do things properly or you can go down the seedy route. Many ladies on the street are run by pimps and funding a habit, as are many trafficked girls. Then there's agencies that supply drugs to girls and get them hooked because it makes them lose their inhibitions, and 'perform' better.
Then there's independents who end up using, because they don't really want to be doing the job, they let themselves be treated with disrespect, lose their self respect and end up having to take drugs to get through escort jobs to keep the money coming in. They're then on a slippery slope.
I discuss this in my book The Girlfriend Experience.
I sometimes went to work and didn't even have a drop of alcohol, and I rarely got tipsy. As far as I am concerned no matter what job you do if you have to drink or take any sort of other drug to go to work, then you've got problems!

how do you think the image of escorts is fairing these days? certainly the drug image is a big part of the culture and puts a lot of people off. i know a lot of escorts needs to use drugs to be with relative strangers. and escorting to pay for the drugs.
